In 2012, US corn farmers faced the worst drought in more than 50 years. Corn is particularly sensitive to lack of water and many corn growers feared for their harvests. Facing increasing constraints and quotas, they needed to supplement rainfall with irrigation. This is costly and energy-intensive – and as wells dry up and deeper pumping lowers the water table, it is just not sustainable.
We partnered with crop irrigation equipment manufacturer Lindsay to develop an integrated solution that helps growers maximize productivity with minimal water use. It combines our drought-resistant seeds, tailored crop protection protocols and water management practices with above- and below-ground environmental sensors and automated irrigation.
Growers tried this novel solution across different parts of the US Corn Belt in 2012. Even under drought conditions, yields were 10-20% higher compared to plots using traditional systems.
This is just one example of how we can make a difference. Our commitment now is to deliver results like these across many more crops and countries.
